Making Eco-Friendly Catering Choices
Typically, you will be expected to supply food and drinks for a wedding. It is also typically very expensive and one of the highest waste-producing parts of a wedding. Food and beverage production, distribution, and disposal of containers, utensils, napkins, food scraps and packaging take their toll on the environment. There are steps you can take to reduce the environmental and financial impact of the food and drinks you serve at your wedding. Consider the environment hen making choices for your catering plan.
-
Avoid disposable items such as drink/coffee cups, plastic utensils, plates, napkins, etc.
Insist that food and beverages be served using reusable washable glasses, plates and utensils.
Ask that your caterer uses all washable linens, glasses, and tableware, not disposable products. This reduces your wedding's waste production significantly. Ask that all cardboard, cans, and bottles be recycled.
-
Does the caterer use environmentally sustainable practices, compost food scraps, use biodegradable cleaning products, and donate / dispose of leftover food responsibly?
-
Choose locally grown produce and local wines to minimize emissions resulting from transportation.
-
Check out the local microbreweries for organic ale or local dairies for handcrafted cheeses.
-
Consider a caterer that offers locally grown organic food. Ask them to shop at the local farmers market.
Serving local organic food will support local growers, the local economy, taste better and be better for your health and the environment.
-
Ask for fair-trade coffee and tea to be served
-
Ask for organic and locally produced wines to be served
-
Consider serving food using hollowed-out fruit as a bowl
-
Choose local fruits and vegetables that are in season to avoid long transportation of food
-
Be careful with your meat choices, particularly beef, as meat production has a significant environmental impact.
-
Consider serving food buffet-style, it can speed things up, reduce the cost of having each table waited on, and guests only take what they need leaving the reusable leftovers.
-
Leftover food should be packaged and frozen (if healthy and safe), donated to a charity, or composted.
Never dispose of leftover food in the normal trash.
-
Plan out the quantities of food carefully and work closely with the caterer.
Make the caterer aware of your desire to be more eco-friendly and minimize waste.
