Choosing Eco-Friendly Wedding Attire
A lot of materials, energy, and human effort go into creating brand new clothes.
Using them once is both costly and wasteful. There are many alternatives to choose from,
although, Brides are sometimes unwilling to compromise when it comes to wedding dresses.
They have a dream or vision of the perfect wedding dress.
Just remember that everything you do greener helps.
You don't have to green everything. There are varying degrees and shades of green.
It is up to you to choose the wedding attire that is right for you.
Consider Renting
Ask yourself these questions: Is renting clothing right for you?
What clothes are you willing to rent vs. buy?
Grooms and Groomsmen typically rent wedding suits / tuxedoes, which saves them considerable money and hassle.
Brides have been known to buy expensive wedding dresses that they only wear once.
Similarly, Bridesmaids buy custom tailored dresses that they only wear once.
Renting suits and dresses lowers the environmental impact of your clothing.
Go Natural When choosing wedding attire for the bridal party, consider choosing clothes made from natural materials.
If you are absolutely set on having a new dress custom made, consider using natural fabrics such as organic cotton, linen, hemp and silk.
If you choose silk, make sure you know that the supplier is using ethical labor practices to process it.
Reuse Old Materials
There is a traditional wedding saying:
"Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Green"
Well, we changed that last one just a bit...
In the "Something Old" category, consider having a vintage family heirloom tailored to fit, or take some materials from old family dresses and having a new dress designed.
Reusing material for dresses helps the environment and saves you money.
It can add a sentimental touch to your wedding.
Consider searching for good quality pre-owned dresses at consignment stores, through online auctions sites (such as eBay / Craigslist), or web sites that focus on pre-owned wedding dresses and bridal gowns, such as
BravoBride,
EncoreBridal,
PreOwnedWeddingDresses
,
SellYourWeddingDress
, or

.
Think about finding vintage clothing at an estate sale or ask your friends and relatives.
Are We Done Yet?
Are you attached to your wedding dress or bridal gown?
Do you want to keep it as an heirloom for future generations?
If not, consider donating your wedding dress, having it reworked into a formal gown or dress you can wear more often, or sell your wedding dress once you are finished with it.
Why leave a perfectly good bridal gown sitting in a closet when someone else can get good use out of it.
New ideas on how to make eco-friendly wedding attire choices emerge regularly.
